At Galápagos Conservancy, we envision a future where the people and nature in Galápagos coexist in harmony. By working alongside local partners, communities, and organizations, we support initiatives that protect the archipelago’s unique biodiversity while fostering a sustainable economy. Our efforts aim to inspire a deep sense of responsibility and connection among residents, ensuring that the unique nature of Galápagos is conserved for generations to come.

Transforming Education for Enviromental Stewardship
In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, we’ve trained nearly 100% of Galápagos’ teachers to incorporate a curriculum specifically designed to meet the environmental and social needs of the archipelago. Now, over 7,000 students of their students have become active stewards of their natural environment. Through expert-led instruction, students learn how they can contribute to protecting their home. This transformative educational process fosters values of responsibility and respect for nature, preparing the next generation to lead in developing a sustainable society.

Pioneering a Sustainability - focused Curriculum
Our work supports a pioneering model for sustainability education in mainland Ecuador, with a curriculum tailored to the distinct challenges and characteristics of Galápagos. It addresses topics like biodiversity, conservation of endemic species, natural resource management, and climate adaptation, equipping students with practical skills to face environmental challenges locally and globally. Through experiential learning, including field trips and research projects, students gain a hands-on connection to nature and a clear understanding of how to address real-world sustainability issues.

Empowering the Community
We empower local residents by supporting community-led initiatives in sustainable entrepreneurship and conservation. Working especially closely with women entrepreneurs, youth, and community leaders, we promote sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the economy. These initiatives provide local economic opportunities and build skills and knowledge that enable Galápagos residents to protect their surroundings actively.
A resilient Galápagos depends on an empowered community. By providing resources and support, we enable residents to lead in conserving natural resources and maintaining a sustainable balance that protects the unique beauty of these islands.
What we are Doing
TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS
Óscar Güiracocha, a resident of San Cristóbal Island, leads an initiative that converts plastic waste into valuable and sustainable products, such as keychains and cellphone holders. His efforts create a positive impact on both the economy and the environment of the Galápagos. With support from Galápagos Conservancy, Óscar developed the region’s first mechanical arm using recycled plastic and 3D printing technology, enhancing the quality of life for fellow community members. This project is a prime example of how innovation and sustainability can bring real change in the archipelago.
LOCAL AGRICULTURE FOR A RESILIENT COMMUNITY
Noemí Rea, an entrepreneur on Isabela Island, is transforming her community through local agriculture with support from Galápagos Conservancy. Her project, “Sowing Life and Protecting Galápagos,” aims to enhance community health and self-sufficiency by providing fresh produce and reducing reliance on imports. This initiative also helps protect local biodiversity by preventing the introduction of invasive species. Thanks to our donors, projects like Noemí’s promote sustainability and well-being in the Galápagos.
INCLUSION FOR YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES
The “Inclusive and Sustainable Craftsmanship” project on Santa Cruz Island, led by Patricio Benavides, is making a significant impact on lives. This workshop offers young people with disabilities the chance to create crafts using recycled materials, promoting both environmental sustainability and workforce inclusion. Through training in woodworking and recycled paper techniques, the initiative provides a space for personal and professional development. It strengthens the local community and fosters a more inclusive and sustainable future in the archipelago.
SYNERGY FOR CONSERVATION AND WELL-BEING
The “Synergy for Well-being and Conservation” project, led by Yanex Álvarez and supported by the Galápagos Conservancy, combines science, art, and environmental awareness for children on Santa Cruz Island. At the Public Library in Puerto Ayora, young participants take part in creative science workshops, field trips, and birdwatching activities. Through these hands-on experiences, they explore the biodiversity of the Galápagos Archipelago. This approach inspires new generations to appreciate their environment and equips them to become future guardians of this unique ecosystem.
