Conserving Galápagos: Protecting Nature and Supporting Communities
At Galápagos Conservancy, our mission is to safeguard this extraordinary natural wonder. Our efforts focus on three pillars: ecosystem restoration, species protection, and community collaboration promoting sustainable practices.
As the main U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated exclusively to conserving Galápagos, we work closely with global and local partners to address the archipelago’s critical challenges. With over 40 years of experience, our dedicated team—comprising local and international experts—strives to conserve the unique biodiversity of this archipelago.
Restoring Ecosystems
Nearly 100 species in Galápagos are currently at risk, including native birds, reptiles, and plants. Our rewilding efforts focus on restoring ecosystems by reintroducing native species and controlling invasive ones that threaten the islands’ ecological integrity. This approach allows native species to thrive and promotes ecosystem recovery across the islands.
Protecting Species
Galápagos biodiversity faces pressures from invasive species, climate change, overfishing, and human activities. By restoring both terrestrial and marine habitats, we work to build resilience in these ecosystems. Our projects target protecting iconic species like giant tortoises, coral reefs, marine and land iguanas, and albatrosses, ensuring their survival for future generations.
Promoting Sustainable Communities
True conservation success involves the active engagement of local residents, who play a vital role in the archipelagos’ protection. Our programs empower community members—especially young people—to become leaders.
